Dystopian Town

DevonLive has done a great dis-service to Teignmouth, they have cobbled together a story from social media chit chat and it would appear taken quotes from an article in the Teignmouth Post written by a journalist who was actually at the meeting. Instead DevonLive created a tabloid-style story of a dystopian town under siege from feral youth. Like many of their readers, I thought they were better than that. Teignmouth relies heavily on tourism and visitors, the town has been singled out for praise by the likes of national newspapers, including the Times and Guardian and this sort of nonsense story from DevonLive only serves to undermine our local economy and jobs.
Like any town, we have our problems and one crime is one too many- but we have excellent Police and PCSOs, we should work together to deal with crime. We did it in West Teignmouth, a combined effort of Neighbourhood Policing Team, councils, community associations, youth organisations, Teign Housing and business saw an 85% drop in anti-social behaviour (I’ve still got the kind letter from the police Chief Inspector thanking me, for my help).
Weeks ago Teignmouth Town Council wrote to Alison Hernandez, Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) asking her about cuts to PCSO numbers. We still await a reply! Ms Hernandez is famous for bonkers ideas about members of the public arming themselves with guns to help fight crime and she has faced accusations of cronyism when she tried to employ a Conservative councillor friend on a large salary. DevonLive reports a Teignmouth Conservative councillor wants to be Ms Hernandez’s ‘Advocate’ having met her at a ‘function’ it would seem more like her apologist. We need action from the PCC, not PR spin.
